Greetings!
At long last, tomatoes have arrived in full force on the farm. It felt like they took forever to ripen up this year, but now they’re here and we’ll get to enjoy them for several weeks to come. There are few things more satisfying than a simple tomato sandwich in peak summer. Many of our other vegetables slowed their production in light of the stress they’d experienced during the heat wave, and so the arrival of ripe tomatoes feels especially welcome right now.
Dahlias are another farm favorite, and they’re beginning to bloom. Dahlias are a labor of love, and we’re happy to welcome them back. We’ll enjoy their stunning blooms until frost comes, and then we’ll spend hours digging and dividing the tubers so that we can grow them again next year. We added a few new varieties to this year’s dahlia field, and we’re so excited to meet all of them.
This week we harvested our potato crop, pulled the last of the spring brassicas, and prepared to plant our fall brassicas. We’re also getting ready to plant the final zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds of the season. August is a slower, transitional month on the farm. We’ll be busy harvesting lots of flowers and summer veggies, but our planting slows down and we mostly wrap up work in the greenhouse for the year. As much as we love the fast pace of early summer on the farm, with this year’s particular challenges, I think we’re all looking forward to a change in pace. That said, September tends to be our busiest month thanks to pawpaw season, so we’ll see what happens then!
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that we are pulling out of the JFX Market for the remainder of the 2020 season. We hope to return to the market next year, but given the limited traffic at the market due to the pandemic, we’ve been unable to make enough money to justify our continued presence there. This wasn’t an easy decision to make; we deeply appreciate our regular customers at JFX and will miss being there.
For now, we will continue to attend the market at Johnny’s. We are grateful for you ongoing support and look forward to seeing you there. We’ll be there Sunday from 8:00-11:00 am.
