Hot Days
Greetings!
We were faced with yet again another heat wave this week, which quite frankly left us all feeling exhausted. So far, this season has felt busier than ever, and it is a constant scramble to keep up with everything that needs to be done. Things are going well on the farm, but I won’t pretend like everything has been easy recently! There are so many cogs to keep turning, and every so often we just have to throw something aside to make time for more important tasks. As overwhelming as things have felt recently, we’re still getting lots of work accomplished, and the farm looks beautiful!
We were lucky enough to host a tour and potluck for some other area farmers on Tuesday evening, and it was such a delight to share the space and talk about growing with them.
This field is filled with our first succession of summer blooms! Amaranth, sunflowers, zinnias, millet, salvia, jewel of opar, cosmos, and lisianthus all live here. Usually at this point in the season most of these plants are quite a bit larger, but with our late, cool spring we were behind on planting. We’re hoping for some good blooms in the near future, though!
Our overwintered cool flower crops all bloomed rapidly as soon as we got some hot weather a couple weeks ago, and it looks like they’re going to tucker out as quickly as they arrived! Usually it seems like we can stretch another week or two out of the first high tunnel plantings, and then rely on the field plantings for a decent amount of time. This year it feels like they’re all flying out of the field, and our summer blooms are still a few weeks off due to the late frosts. We’re a bit nervous about this, but hopeful that things will work out—they always do!
Right now we’re really excited about these breadseed poppies. They look so cheerful in the field, but we grow them for the seedpods, which are beautiful fresh or dried.
Nigella season is short, but it’s so great to have while it lasts!
Creme foxglove, another fleeting beauty.
This week’s bouquets feature foxglove, campanula, and delphinium.
We’re back at the JFX market on Sunday from 7:00-12:00.
It is really truly the last week for ranunculus! We’ll have some straight bunches of ranunculus available, after this, you’ll have to wait for 2023.
This week’s market stand will feature bouquets, campanula bunches delphinium bunches, foxglove bunches. peony bunches, poppy bunches, ranunculus bunches, elderflowers, edible flowers, spring mix, and hakurei turnips.
Wishing you well,
Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots crew
