Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Easing into the calmer days

Hello, friends!

As we move further into October the days grow shorter and the world begins to quiet. This is the last of our truly busy weeks. After our three weddings this weekend we’ll be saying goodbye to extravagant floral design for the year and hello to wreath making and farm cleanup. The days of big flower harvests are numbered, and soon we’ll pause florist deliveries until Spring arrives. The barn is beginning to fill up with autumn wreaths and dried flowers, and the days of evergreen wreaths are not too far off. We’re all looking forward to what November has to offer!

On Wednesday our crew took the van to pick up a huge load of straw, which we use for mulching our overwintered dahlias, among other crops. The annual straw run always seems to signal a turning point in the year. There’s time to leave the farm in the middle of the day?! It’s definitely the tail end of the growing season. Most of our overwintered flowers are in the ground, and any day now we’ll receive a massive shipment of tulip bulbs. Our weekly to-do list has switched over to the end of season, everything we need to get done before December 25th to-do list.

We got to witness extraordinary moonsets this week. One of the joys of waking up early for farm work is getting to see the moon disappear into the daylight. October always brings spectacular moon views. The mornings now are calm and gentle, we ease into the day a bit more slowly than in the summers when we race to beat the heat.

We’ve designed for a record number of weddings this year, so we’re looking forward to some winter rest. Wedding work is challenging, but it’s also a lot of fun to stretch our creative muscles and utilize the incredible blooms we grow.

Sunday, October 24th, 8:00 am - 11:00 am: Johnny’s

We’ll be back at our regular market this weekend with lots of good stuff to share.

This week we’ll have carrots, figs, hakurei turnips, radishes, spring mix, and shishito peppers. Our produce offerings for the year are dwindling, but we’ll do our best to bring a good selection to market weekly.

We’ll have plenty of bouquets, in addition to bunches of mums, dahlias, and eucalyptus.

And, finally, wreaths are back!

Wishing you well,

Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots Farm crew

Autumn wreath making has begun! We’ll be bringing wreaths to market for the remainder of the season.
