Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Rainy Days

We got 2 inches of rain on Tuesday night and one of our gorgeous stands of cover crop was completely knocked down.

Greetings!

Due to the onslaught of rain from tropical storm Debby we’ve harvested up a storm this week, cutting every possible bloom in advance of potential rain damage. We’re hoping for the best during Friday’s weather, but we seem to always have at least one major destructive storm in August. Once the storm blows by it looks like we’ll be in for a lovely week of sun and mild temperatures, including a gorgeous market on Sunday!

The demand for our flowers recently has been extraordinary. For the past two weeks our delivery van has been absolutely packed with florist orders, which is quite unusual for this time of year. We’re in peak Lisianthus season and with dahlias beginning to roll in as well, the morning harvests are beginning to stretch into the early afternoons.  As we move into wedding season the harvests will continue to grow. It can be overwhelming, but it’s sweet to see blooms going out to the world en mass.

Despite the rains and busy harvest days, there’s plenty of work to do on the farm.  We’ve got a healthy stands of buckwheat that are ready to terminate in our high tunnels, heirloom mums to weed, marigolds to pinch and stake, and plenty of random tasks we never manage to accomplish on nice days.  We’ll hold off on field work for the most part until the fields dry out, so as not to cause any soil compaction. In advance of rain, we went ahead and seeded cover crop in some recently vacated beds. Hopefully it won’t rain so much that the seed is washed away! We also ran around the farm checking all of the flowers are help up by stakes and hortanova netting.

Waterlogged hydrangeas— these things can hold a ton of water in their massive flower heads!

Spooky is unimpressed by the rain.

We’re at the Baltimore Farmers Market this Sunday, August 11th from 7:00- 12:00! It looks like the weather will be amazing!

We’re planning to bring bouquets, hydrangeas, celosia, dahlias eucalyptus, lisianthus, snapdragons, tweedia, rudbeckia triloba, salvia, and Two Boots merch.

And, of course, the Build Your Own Bouquet bar is back!

Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you at the market!

Our crested and cockscomb celosias are absolutely stunning right now! We’re bringing tons of these beauties to market this week.
