Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Waning summer days

Greetings, farm friends!

Butterflies are everywhere on the farm these days, and it’s a magical feeling to stand in the fields surrounded by them.

Summer is flying by and pawpaw season will begin so soon. We seeded the year’s final succession of sunflowers this week, which closes out our summer annual plantings. We’ll take a break from planting for about a month, after which we’ll transplant and direct seed our cool season crops. In the meantime we’ll keep on seeding cover crops (and shuffling around hoses to water them in), begin our perennial crop maintenance, work on preparing our fields for autumn and winter, and, of course, harvest pawpaws. It’s exciting to turn this corner on the season, and I’m pleased to report that the farm has never looked better at the end of August! Last week’s storm may have done a number on the pawpaw crop, and downed quite a few branches, but I returned from vacation astonished to see such a tidy and well managed farm. Our crew is incredible this year, and we are so, so, SO THANKFUL to work with such kind, hardworking people!

Our alstromeria crop was looking sad for a while, so we gave it some compost and fertilizer and forgot about it for a couple of weeks. During our Monday field walk we realized that it had bounced back and was better than ever! It’s a new crop for us, and we’re enjoying its vibrant, long lasting blooms.

This cat, Annie, belongs to the neighboring horse farm. She’s been visiting us daily as we harvest lisianthus. She loves drinking from our buckets, playing in the UTV, and stopping by for pets. She’s won all of our hearts!

We’re back at the JFX Market this Sunday, August 20th.

This week’s market availability will feature bouquets, bunches of dahlias, lisianthus, millet, sunflowers, veronica, snapdragons, and of course, our build your own bouquet bar.

Don’t forget, we’ve got a floral painting workshop on the farm on September 9th with Patricia O’Brien!

Thanks for reading, and enjoy these waning summer days!

Amelia, leading our morning team meeting.

Jim Davis, our pawpaw mentor and owner of the country’s largest pawpaw orchard, came out to the farm this week to see the orchard and help us identify some unknown cultivars.

We’ve been enjoying watermelons from our crew garden. A real summer delight.
