Cold snap, wreath workshops, and more!
Greetings, friends!
The impending very cold weather has had us running around all week trying to get row cover out on all of our crops and making sure everything is tucked in and ready for the chill. We had a surprisingly hard freeze on Monday night that wiped out the last of our harvestable blooms, slightly earlier than expected. Generally we try to get row covers on all of our overwintered flowers when the weather is predicted to be 26 degrees or cooler. Above 26, we try to keep the plants uncovered so as to let them breathe, especially in the high tunnels where the air isn’t circulating as much and there’s more potential for fungal disease pressure. The cool flowers are hardy enough to handle these temperatures, and most of our winters are relatively mild, with temperatures reaching above freezing during the days.
When we’re not running around trying to tie up loose ends before the cold snap, we’ve been making lots of wreaths for this weekend’s market, harvesting the last of the ornamental kale crop, and planting the last few bulbs, hardy annuals, and woody perennials that were waiting to get in the ground. The to-do list is rapidly shrinking, and soon enough we’ll be fully focused on planning for the coming year.
I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time fine-tuning our crop plan this winter. We have a pretty solid system when it comes to knowing what we want to grow, but there are a few crops I’d like to better dial in the timing of, and there’s always room for improvement throughout! It’s a massive puzzle, but quite a fun one to work through.
Upcoming Markets
We’ll be at the JFX market this weekend, and then for two more weeks to finish out the season:
Nov 20
Dec. 4
Dec. 11
At these final markets of the year we’ll be selling wreaths, bulbs, new Two Boots hats and tote bags, and whatever seasonal delights we still have available (it’s looking like we’ll have persimmons, turnips and lettuce this week). We look forward to seeing you soon!
We will also be vending at the Station North holiday market on December 10th from 1:00-5:30 pm.
