The Hot Days of Summer
We’re still chugging along in the fields, slowly but surely adapting, once again, to the hot and humid Maryland summer. We’ve all been a bit sluggish recently thanks to the weather, but it feels like we’re all beginning to pick up the pace and get where we need to be. Farming is a constant challenge, but that’s one of the many reasons we love it.
This week we seeded the majority our fall brassicas and most of next spring’s cool flowers! We seed our first planting of cool flowers in July, and try to transplant them in August and September. They spend the next 9 months in the field and high tunnels, stretching out their roots and slowly growing into the Spring’s earliest blooms. We’re just now winding down the harvest of the cool flowers we seeded last July. Flowers, in general, take longer to reach maturity than most vegetable plants, so they sit in the field for a long time and there’s not a lot of turnaround on beds throughout the season.
With our transition back into more vegetable production this year, we’ve been reminded that growing vegetables requires frequent bed flips and rapid transitions. Space is our biggest limiting factor at Two Boots, and when we decided to grow more vegetables this year, we nearly doubled our production. Since we plant nearly every week of the season, we’ve always spent a lot of time preparing and planting beds, but this year we’ve taken it to another level! We’re maximizing space to the best of our ability and transitioning beds as quickly as we can. We keep wondering why we’re so busy, and then remember that we doubled down this year. Sharing our vegetables and flowers with you makes it all worth it. Every season holds a new adventure!
We’ll be returning to the Baltimore Farmers’ Market once again this weekend. The market runs from 7:00-12:00.
We’ve also decided to continue attending the market at Johnny’s. We’re grateful for you ongoing support and look forward to seeing you there! We’ll be there Sunday from 8:00-11:00 am.
