Happy Equinox!
Hello, farm friends!
Fall has arrived and with it came light frosts and beautiful days. All of our crops made it through the unbelievably early frosts, thank goodness. We generally don’t expect any frost until October! We’re welcoming the cool weather and enjoying all that Autumn has to offer. This week we’ve been working on bed prep for our overwintered flowers, planting the last of our fall and winter salad crops, and cover cropping empty beds around the farm. In no time, we’ll be switching gears and spending several days a week making wreaths and working on the other projects that get us through the cold months. It’s hard to believe we’re approaching that time of year! There’s still a lot of work to do, but our to-do lists are getting shorter and it feels like we’ve turned a corner on the growing season.
With the change in seasons, we’re once again beginning to harvest and eat loads of greens and roots. We finished out sweet potato harvest this week and they look incredible! It’s such a joy to dig up a row of sweet potatoes and find a bountiful harvest after watching their greens stretch through the field for several months, wondering what’s underneath. The sweet potatoes and our butternuts are curing in the greenhouse, kale and collards are standing tall in the field, and we should have an abundance of salad greens for weeks to come.
This will likely be our last week with pawpaws. They’re only in season for a brief period of time, and we’re sad to see them go. We will be at Freshfarm’s Dupont Circle Farmers Market again this Sunday for our last pawpaw pop-up of 2020. If you’d like to preorder pawpaws to pickup at Dupont, use our online store.
We’re also now accepting preorders for wreaths! We’re currently only accepting orders for grapevine wreaths, but later on in the season we'‘ll begin making evergreen wreaths as well. The wreaths we make in early Autumn tend to be abundant in dried flowers and grasses. Closer to Thanksgiving, we’ll begin offering wreaths that have more berries and evergreen branches incorporated in the design. Place your wreath order here.
Here’s where you can find us this weekend:
September 27th, 8:30 am -1:30 pm: Dupont Circle Farmers Market
September 27th, 8:00 am - 11:00 pm: Johnny’s
We’ll just be bringing pawpaws to the Dupont Circle Market, but at Johnny’s we will also have chard, collard greens, eggplant, kale, lettuce mix, shishito peppers, spicy salad, sweet peppers, and bouquets.
Wishing you well,
Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots Farm crew
