Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

October on the Farm

Greetings!

We’ve had a pleasant, busy week on the farm. The vast majority of our pawpaws ripened later than usual this year, and so we’ve had our biggest harvests of the season this week. We usually expect the harvest to be dwindling at this point, and so it was a big surprise to bring in our biggest haul of the season on Monday! Fortunately, there seems to be an insatiable hunger for pawpaws these days, so a late season bumper crop is no problem.

We’re also in the midst of an unexpectedly enormous flush of dahlias. They’d been producing blooms at a steady pace for the past month or so, and suddenly, Monday morning, our harvest was double what it had regularly been! All week we’ve been cutting them as fast as we can, which is truly a labor of love. We use organza bags to cover each bloom in the field, which protects the flowers from bugs. So, before we harvest, we have to walk through the field removing each bag from the mature blooms and transferring them to younger buds. Only once that process is complete do we get to start harvesting from our 1500 dahlia plants!

Our fall veggie crops are in full swing, and the fields are brimming with beautiful greens, radishes, and ginger. After a tough summer, such abundance is truly a gift. As we harvest these fall crops, we’re also looking towards next Spring. This week we transplanted and direct seeded the majority of our overwintered flowers, and we’re preparing the high tunnels for planting ranunculus and tulips, which get planted a little bit later in the season. We’re planting more flowers for 2021 than we’ve ever grown before!

We expect that our season will begin to wind down in the near future. For the time being, we’ll harvest all we can until a hard frost arrives!

We’re still now accepting preorders for wreaths! We’re currently only accepting orders for grapevine wreaths, but later on in the season we will begin making evergreen wreaths as well. The wreaths we make in early Autumn tend to be abundant in dried flowers and grasses. Closer to Thanksgiving, we’ll begin offering wreaths with more berries and evergreen branches incorporated in the design. Place your wreath order here.
