November on the farm
Greetings!
The first hard frost arrived over the weekend, and work around the farm is really settling down now. We’ve got a lot to do over the next month- dahlia tubers to divide, wreaths to make, and crops to pull, and planning to do- but the end of the 2020 season is truly in sight. We’ve immensely enjoyed the unseasonably warm, sunny weather the last few days, and it’s been nice to have daylight when we start work in the morning. We’re been focused on finishing up our cool flower and perennial plantings, which has been a great way to keep our minds and bodies busy during this intensely stressful week.
As the season winds down, so too does our selection of produce and flowers. We have some marigolds and gomphrena in the high tunnels, and we’ve got tons of eucalyptus growing, but other than that, our blooms and foliage are just about wiped out! We’ve still got lots of cold hardy veggies available, but many of our loose greens took a hard hit from the frost, so salads may be limited in the coming weeks.
We planted garlic on Thursday! It’s been a long time since we’ve grown it, and we’re looking forward to the harvest next summer.
We composted and fertilized all of our pawpaw seedlings this week, and then started planting a windbreak next to them! We planted lilacs, abelia, and smokebush, and we’ll eventually fill in the area with more perennial shrubs and fruit trees.
We’re still accepting preorders for wreaths! We’re currently only accepting orders for grapevine wreaths, but we will soon begin making evergreen wreaths as well. We’re beginning to incorporate more greens and berries into the design, so if you’ve been holding out for a more wintry wreath, now’s the time to order! Place your wreath order here.
We’ll have some of the last lettuce of the season at market this week! Don’t miss out.
Here’s where you can find us this weekend:
November 7th, 8:00 am - 11:00 am: Johnny’s
We’ll be at market with broccoli, butternut squash, chard, collard greens, hakurei turnips, kale, lettuce mix, spinach, sweet potatoes, watermelon radishes, wreaths, and eucalyptus bunches.
Though our CSA has ended for the season, we’ll continue to offer produce boxes for pickup on Thursdays through our online store. The order period closes on Tuesdays at 11:59 pm. We’ll offer these until we start to run out of produce!
Wishing you well,
Amelia and the rest of the Two Boots Farm crew
This week we welcomed Delaney to the farm. She’ll be working with us and lovingly snuggling Grey, the farm cat for the month of November, and we’re thrilled to have her here!
