Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

All Tucked in for a Winter Sleep

Greetings!

We’ve been chipping away at cleaning up the farm for quite a while now, and on Thursday we wrapped up the majority of our tasks. We’ve got our overwintered flowers tucked under row cover, empty beds composted and covered under silage tarps, and our visiting goats moving around the farm, grazing on cover crop and brambles. We’ll finish off the season with a rush to make wreaths for our final markets, divide dahlia tubers, and submit our seed orders for 2021. There’s plenty of work to do, but wrapping up the vast majority of the field work is a seasonal milestone. We’re looking forward to having more time to rest, relax, and explore our hobbies and interests outside of farming.

We’ll be back at Johnny’s this coming Sunday, December 6th, and then once more on December 13th. After that, our Sunday mornings will be spent at home until springtime. The December markets will be holiday oriented, featuring local artisans alongside the regular market vendors.

Now that we’ve emptied most of the fields of irrigation and landscape fabric, we’ve begun to let the goats graze on cover crops and plantings that we’re no longer harvesting from. The goat in the foreground seems to have a particular affinity for fennel! It’s been a joy to have the goats on the farm; in addition to eating brambles and building soil, they’re providing much needed entertainment.

The image may not be glamorous, but this is what a farmer’s winter dreams are made of! All of the plants are neatly tucked in under row cover, ready for the long winter ahead. We use row cover to provide an extra layer of protection to our plants. The row cover acts as a light blanket, providing the plants with a warm layer on cold nights. You can also use row cover throughout the year to protect from insect damage. Row cover is a small farm essential!

We’re still accepting preorders for wreaths! Place your wreath order here.
