Summer days
Greetings!
We’ve enjoyed a relatively slow pace on the farm this week, and we’re certainly appreciating the brief respite from the heat Thursday brought us. This point in the summer is always a bit slower than the rest of the growing season. Customers take vacations, weddings are less likely to happen in the hottest weeks of the year, and there’s just not a lot of demand for flowers. The slower pace of orders gives us a chance to do a lot of crop maintenance, host a few farm tours, and offers us a little break before the onslaught of pawpaw and wedding season come September.
Most of our crops are looking good these days. We’ve recently experienced some intense rabbit pressure, which has never been a problem in the past, and a few things struggled after being transplanted in last week’s heat, but on the whole, we really couldn’t be happier with the state of things. When it’s as hot as it has been, you just have to accept that not everything growing will be completely happy and healthy, and hope for the best. Peak summer is tough, and we do what we can to keep the farm in good shape, and we try to acknowledge that it’s okay to let go on occasion.
Right now, letting go means accepting that dahlias really dislike the high temperatures that we’ve endured recently, and they just won’t produce the best blooms when they’re so stressed out. Overwintering dahlias brought us early blooms, some of which are truly stunning, but it’ll be a month or two before the plants are truly happy and pumping out the most glorious stems in large quantities. For now, we’ll take what we can get!
