Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

September Notes

Hello!

I hope you are all faring well after Wednesday’s storm. We got about 3.5 inches of rain at the farm and lost power for 20 hours, but came out mostly unscathed otherwise. We feel so fortunate to have come out of the storm with such minimal damage to our crops. The devastation Hurricane Ida left in its wake was immense, and our hearts are with those suffering losses from the storm.

We’ve had a busy, but not too stressful week. The pawpaw harvest seems to grow a little bit each day, we’ve got mountains of shishito peppers in the fridge, and just about every flower on the farm is sold before it’s even harvested. We all were relieved to enjoy cool weather and blue skies on Thursday. After Wednesday’s storm and the recent extreme heat and humidity, a 70 degree day felt unbelievably good. It’s amazing how much easier it is to farm in pleasant weather!

Tomato season is almost over, but I made an incredible tomato salad earlier this week and feel compelled to share the recipe with you. My mom raved about this tomato salad to me repeatedly this summer, but I never felt like making it because I tend to believe that tomato-mozzarella salads are overrated. This one, however, is absolutely not! The recipe is from Yotam Ottolenghi’s book, Plenty. Here’s a link to the recipe, and a link to purchase the cookbook. My mom told me she thinks that every farmer should share this recipe with their customers, and I have to say, I agree! Try it before the tomatoes disappear for another year!

We’re harvesting tons of shishitos these days. They’re a great, easy appetizer.
