Pawpaw Time
Hello!
Pawpaw season is here in earnest and we’re busy harvesting away. It’s been an absolutely lovely week on the farm, with relatively cool temperatures, a relaxed pace, and big harvests of some of our favorite crops. In addition to our substantial pawpaw harvest this week, we’ve had a massive flush of shiitake mushrooms thanks to last week’s rain. We’ve got fruit on logs that were inoculated in 2014 and logs that were inoculated in 2020, and every year in between! It’s really neat to be harvesting from logs that were inoculated so long ago. The oldest logs are absolutely falling apart, crumbling as we cut the mushrooms, but still producing beautiful shiitakes. We only get a few shiitake harvests each year, so it’s always a delight to see them fruit.
Now that we’ve got plenty of pawpaws to share, it’s time for our pop-up presence at DC area markets!
This weekend, we’ll be at the Takoma Park Farmers Market, Sunday from 10:00-2:00. If you’ve never made it out to the Takoma Park Farmers Market before, it’s certainly worth the trip! The Takoma Park market is a producers-only market, with a fantastic array of local goods.
We’ll just have pawpaws at the market, but there will be plenty of other folks there with more to offer. Other wonderful farmers at that market include Calvert’s Gift Farm (Elisa’s mentors and fantastic vegetable growers), Migrash Farm (who grow phenomenal grains, perfect for use in all of those breads you learned to bake early on in the pandemic), and Purple Mountain (local rice, beans, grains, and veggies).
