Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Fruits and Blooms

Hello!

We’ve had an extremely busy week here on the farm, and we’re exhausted. I’ll keep today’s newsletter short and sweet. We has a great time last weekend at the Takoma Park Farmers Market, and this weekend we’ll be at FRESHFARM’s Dupont Circle Market with pawpaws and ginger!

Dahlias are blooming in full force these days. We’d thought our harvests were huge in previous weeks, but this week puts them all to shame! I think that every year we have a tendency to forget just how productive the plants become when September hits. Since we overwintered the plants, we also weren’t entirely sure if they would slow down at all because they’d been producing for such a long time at this point. We’ve given them boosts of a homemade calcium phosphate fertilizer (made using charred bones and apple cider vinegar, a Korean Natural Farming technique), and tried to stay on top of tying up the plants so they don’t fall over. The work has paid off, and we’re harvesting (and selling!) an unbelievable number of stems each day.

I know that this time of year the newsletter ends up being all about dahlias and pawpaws, and you might be tired of that. Elsewhere on the farm, we’ve harvested our first heirloom mums of the season, a sign of cooler days to come, and our crew pulled out our tomato plants to make room for overwintered flowers. We’ve got loads of foxglove and snapdragons to plant in the next couple of weeks, and plenty more cool flowers coming soon. I’ll never cease to think that to be planting flowers for next May in September, but here we are!

Pawpaw madness continues!

This weekend, we’ll be at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market, Sunday from 8:30-1:30. The Dupont Circle Market is huge and features a fantastic array of vendors.
