Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Autumn's Arrival

Greetings!

After a rainy Thursday, the farm is thoroughly soaked and the air feels thoroughly autumnal. Before the rain came, we managed to direct seed the first of our 2022 larkspur, bachelors button, agrostemma, and nigella, and in the coming days we’ll be transplanting snapdragons, foxglove, delphinium, and orlaya. Pawpaw season is slowing down and it feels good to be thinking ahead to next spring. We’re looking forward to the cooler days and the change of pace that autumn brings. Just a few more weeks until frost hits!

On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to do field work together as a full crew for the first time in months. It was really nice to all work together on a project; work at Two Boots is often solo or done in pairs, so we don’t always get to see a lot of one another. We’re all fairly quiet, solitary people who work well on an individual basis, so this workflow doesn’t really bother us, but it was refreshing to work together for part of an afternoon. I hope we get to do more of that in October!

Once pawpaw season comes to an end, we’ll be pushing hard to get all of the overwintered flowers planted, fertilize and weed our perennials, and remove all of the summer crops to make way for cover cropping. And, of course, October is when we start to make our fabulous autumn wreaths! Fall is such an exciting time.

The pawpaw harvest is beginning to dwindle, but we’ll still have plenty available this weekend. This is the last weekend of our popup markets, so if you’re in the D.C. area and still in need of a pawpaw fix, swing by on Sunday!

Elisa and Peter will be slinging pawpaws at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market, Sunday from 8:30-1:30. We’ll also send some dahlias and ginger to Dupont.
