Solstice Showers
Greetings, farm friends!
We’re relieved and pleased to report that the farm finally received a substantial rain. As I write this, we’re nearly to one inch, with more in the forecast! A lovely Summer Solstice gift. We’ve been watching the birds bathe in puddles and worms emerge from the most ground. It feels as though the world has come back to life with a little bit of rain!
As we turn the corner into summertime, we’re enjoying the arrival of summer blooms just as we begin to say goodbye to more of springtime’s delicate beauties. This week brought in the first dahlia and marigolds! I love time of year, during which we get to play with the best of both seasons. Everything is beautiful and lush right now, and the farm is truly a lovely place to be.
This week’s farm work was really just a bed preparation and planting bonanza, which ended up being perfectly timed for the rainfall. Everything that got tucked in this week got a nice drink of water and should be off to a good start for the summer. We planted summer snapdragons, celosia, cosmos, gomphrena, Chinese forget-me-not, zinnias, scabiosa, and more. And, just as we’re planting out our late summer successions, we’re seeding in the greenhouse for Fall crops. Every day we find ourselves looking months ahead. Most of our crops take at least two and a half months from seed to flower; many take quite a bit longer.
We’re hosting a couple more workshops on the farm in the coming weeks, please consider joining us! If the cost is prohibitive, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re happy to work with you and we want these to be accessible and available to all!
July 8th: Open Design Day on the farm- We will tour the farm with the sun on our back while sipping mimosas and N/A beverages. Then we will head up to the barn and you get to decide what you want to work on. Hand tied bouquet? arrangement in a vase? Flower crown? I will assist you and show you how. Please email me before the class to let me know what you want to create so I have the correct materials/flowers on hand and ready to go.
July 15th: Eco-printing & Bouquet Technique Workshop with Monique Crabb and Elisa Lane
We will have a tour of the farm before we begin the workshop and you will leave with an eco-printed silk scarf and cotton tea towel, and a bouquet of flowers you will arrange yourself.
The two eco-printing techniques are Bundle Dyeing, which uses steam to extract color from plants onto fabric and Hapa Zome is the Japanese art of beating pigment out of leaves and flowers with a hammer. You are also allowed to bring one small natural fiber item to alter with plant colors.
Upcoming Markets
June 18th: Baltimore Farmers’ Market under the JFX. We’ll have bouquets, campanula, larkspur, snapdragons, cosmos, scabiosa, our build your own bouquet bar, basil, and Two Boots Merch. We’re planning to bring posies made with flowers that are perfect for drying this week!
Thanks for reading this far!
Wishing you all the best,
Amelia & the Two Boots crew
