July days
Greetings, farm friends!
What a beautiful week! We’re hard at work this week tending to our crops. The crew knocked out so much weeding this week. The farm went from beginning to feel like a jungle to looking like it’s ready for a magazine feature. Our crops are thriving and, pollinators are out in mass, and the annual return of the butterflies seems to have begun in earnest. Of course, it’s still hot and humid but our bodies are adapting to the heat and it’s beginning to feel less oppressive.
Though some things have slowed down a little bit with the arrival of peak summer we’re still quite busy with florist orders and our regular work load. Our days are full and tiring, but what we grow and create is gorgeous.
This week we picked up the first of this year’s ornamental kale seedlings, which we had Sharps Farm start for us. They look incredible, and we’re looking forward to this beautiful crop come Autumn. Though we tend to start most of our seedlings in our own greenhouse, there are certain crops that we have other people seed out for us. We’ve found that in the heat of the summer we encounter more challenges with maintaining our greenhouse seedlings than we do at other points in the year. The intense sun and heat lead trays to dry out faster, pest pressure is high, and we’re often just too busy elsewhere on the farm to dedicate our full attention to the greenhouse. As such, we source some of our seedlings through Sharps, and others through a cut flower plug broker. Simply put, they’re better able to manage these crops in their greenhouses than we are this time of year, and since healthy seedlings are critical to our success, it’s worth it to us to outsource this effort.
We enjoyed a fantastic Eco-printing workshop with Monique Crabb over the weekend, and we’re looking forward to our Bloom and Flow event in August!
We’re back at the JFX Market this Sunday, July 23rd.
For this week’s market we’ll have bouquets, dahlias, sunflowers, snapdragons, strawflower, rudbeckia, cosmos, basil and so much more!
Thanks for reading this far!
Wishing you all the best,
Amelia & the Two Boots crew
