Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Crop crops and wrapping up

Greetings, farm friends!

With no market to attend this weekend and the bulk of our field work completed until frost comes along, we’ve had quite a pleasant week on the farm. Walking around the farm on Thursday I found myself very impressed by the thoroughness of our cover cropping and field cleanup efforts.

Since we stopped growing lettuce and other vegetables, we’ve been able to do a better job of getting cover crops established. We used to plant three beds of lettuce biweekly, along with regular plantings of turnips, radishes, and carrots. The seeding and planting took up a lot of our time, and the crops took a lot of bed space. This year we’ve been able to focus more thoroughly on caring for our crops and for the soil. Another thing we did differently this year was using row cover to help our cover crop germinate. As much as it’s a pain to get our row cover and sandbags every time we seed cover crop, we’ve had much improved germination and decreased rabbit pressure as the plants get established. For us, that’s a huge win.

Well-established cover crop will help prevent soil erosion through the winter, add organic matter to the soil, and provide other benefits such as fixing nitrogen in the soil. The cover crops we’re using this winter are rye, oats, and clover. Hooray for living roots in the soil all year long!

Wreath pre-orders are live!

Since we’ll be attending fewer markets this fall, we’re offering pre-orders for our ever-popular winter wreaths. We’re offering three colorways and the option to add pinecones for those who want the full-on winter effect. Each wreath is unique and designed with care. We’ve been gathering flowers all year to make them! These wreaths last all winter hanging on your door outside.

Savoring every last bloom these days.

No market for us this week!

We will return to the Baltimore Farmers Market in November for one day only, November 19th.

We’re also planning to attend the Station North Holiday Market again this year— details to come!

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your weekend,
