Two Boots Farm

A family run farm and floral design studio in Hampstead, Maryland. We grow a wide variety of cut flowers and produce. We also have over 100 cultivated pawpaw fruit trees. We use ecologically sustainable practices so that future generations can continue to grow in healthy soil.

Springtime whirlwind

Greetings, farm friends!

We’ve had another week of weather that’s not quite typical of a Maryland spring. Panicking about the heat, we ended up throwing shadecloth on three of our high tunnels on Thursday, which we’ll likely remove once the heat wave passes this weekend. Then it looks like we’re in for a bit of a chilly week— a good reminder that you should really wait to plant your warm season crops until the threat of frost is truly passed.

The heat brought on an explosion of ranunculus; peak ranunculus season is certainly happening early this year. It’s possible that their season will be short-lived, as they tend to shut down when it gets so warm. Hopefully next week’s cooler weather will coax them into sending out a few more stems for us. We’re also already seeing sizable buds on the peonies. Provided we don’t get a frost that damages them, we may have our earliest peony harvest ever.

This spring is unlike any other we’ve experienced while farming here. The winter was abnormally warm and dry, and that’s continued into the growing season. We’re doing our best to hold our heads high, but it really is challenging to adapt to this weather. We typically don’t have to irrigate our fields this early in the season, and we’re definitely wondering if the heat is going to shorten our spring harvest. Our crew only started a couple weeks ago, and it feels like we threw them in the deep end without the opportunity to adapt to the workflow and figure things out on the farm, as everything seems to be happening early and in rapid succession. Luckily, we’ve got several returning crew members who know what’s going on and are able to quickly adapt to the situation. We’re so grateful to work with such a great team!

Ready to contend with this hot spring in your own garden? You’ve got just a few more days to place orders for our 2023 Plant Sale! The ordering period closes on April 24th. Get those last minute orders in for this summer’s garden. If you’d prefer to shop in person, no worries- you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get your paws on seedlings at our markets in May. We’re feverishly potting up seedlings in the greenhouse each day, and hiring extra help to get it all done!

Gray received her annual shave last week and she’s got a fresh pep in her step.

Ranunculus in full bloom!

A handful of Spring bouquets.

Spring Flower Shares began this week! The first bouquets of the season were particularly lush thanks to the heatwave. Typically at this point in the year we’re struggling to find foliage to fill out bouquets, but no troubles this time around!

Summer, Fall, Full Season, and Dahlia Flower Shares are still available. Our Flower Shares are a great way to support the farm and bring a bit of natural beauty into your home each week. They make wonderful gifts!

We offer pickups on the farm, at Motzi Bread in Baltimore, and at The Wine Merchant in Timonium.

This is our first time growing a colorful assortment of anemones, and I love these bold blooms.
